History
Anxiety disorders have a relatively short history, as they were only collectively and formally recognized by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980.
Prior to 1980, Anxiety Disorders were referred to as 'stress', and 'nerves' and were thought to mainly affect women. Nowadays, we know that any person of any age is susceptible to anxiety disorders, and they are a type of mental illness.
